LINENS FROM JAPAN
There are many different linen and linen blends coming from Japan on indent. Some fabrics labelled Linen are actually made from Ramie Linen. Ramie comes from a plant in the nettle family rather than from the traditional flax plant. They are both ancient fibres found in textiles going back thousands of years, although Ramie is believed to be the older of the two. They are similar in appearance and almost impossible to tell apart in a burn test. Both grow without the need for additional chemicals so can both be considered more sustainable than conventional cotton. Both fibres are breathable and are biodegradable. Both will crease but can withstand high temperatures for washing and ironing. Both are mildew resistant and will dry quickly.
There are, however, a couple of differences. Ramie is a lot stronger than flax linen when wet but can be more brittle when dry. It can be woven a lot finer so can be made into very sheer, very light weight voiles. Ramie tends to have less natural slubs and has a more definite surface sheen. Ramie has a slightly courser handle and can sometimes feel a bit prickly against the skin. It doesn't soften as much as linen with washing. Ramie is more absorbent than flax and possesses natural antibacterial properties. Ramie dyes more easily.
